There are some questions we can avoid for a long time.
What happens when the body stops? What happens to the person we love? Is death the end? Is there really more after this life? And if there is, what does that mean for us now?
Those questions became very real for me after my mom died.
In the days that followed, I found myself replaying the final hours, wondering if I should have stayed, wondering if I did enough, wondering what was really happening in that hospital room. Then God gave me a perspective I had not considered before.
What I saw physically was not necessarily the whole story of what He was doing spiritually.
That thought became the beginning of What Happens Next?
The book is not about trying to describe heaven in detail or pretending we can answer every mystery about eternity. It is really about learning to see death differently. Scripture gives us language for transition, presence, relationship, and hope. It reminds us that the body is not the whole of who we are and that for those who belong to Christ, death is not disappearance.
It also makes room for the questions people do not always feel comfortable asking.
Why did this happen?
Where was God?
What about a sudden or traumatic death?
What about babies and children?
What about suicide?
What do we do with anger toward God?
And what about all of the things people say after a loss that are meant to comfort us but somehow make the pain worse?
Those are not small questions, and I did not want to treat them that way. The book approaches them with Scripture, but also with honesty and compassion.
One of the things I came to understand through writing it is that grief and faith are not opposites.
You can love God and still hurt.
You can trust Him and still have questions.
You can believe in eternity and still deeply miss the person who is no longer here.
Grief is not proof that your faith is weak. It is often simply proof that the relationship mattered.
And underneath all of those questions is an even bigger one.
If Jesus really is alive, and if He really is who He said He is, what does that mean for me?
That is ultimately where the book leads. Not to pressure. Not to a checklist. Not to pretending you suddenly have everything figured out. It leads to an invitation to consider Jesus honestly, to sit with the questions, and to take whatever next step you are ready to take.
What Happens Next? was written for people who are grieving, questioning, believing, doubting, or simply wondering what lies beyond what we can see. It is for the person who wants something deeper than clichés and more honest than easy answers.
And maybe that is the point.
We do not have to understand everything about eternity to know who we can trust with it.
Sometimes the next step is not getting every answer.
Sometimes the next step is simply being willing to keep walking.
God does the how. You do the do.
